You Should Be Honest

You should be honest. I should be honest. We could all be more honest with ourselves. When I am truly and unerringly honest with myself, I find inescapable truths that I have long sought to bury.

I don’t lie. There are three reasons why.

  1. I’m horrible at lying. This is the easiest reason for why I don’t tell lies. Even if they might be little lies, I try to speak the truth as best as I can. I feel guilty if I don’t. I also feel like it’s important to mention that as a teacher and mentor, I would never want to lie to my students or those who trust me. I’ve seen a million little lies, and I don’t want to encourage that kind of behavior in myself or others.
  2. I feel morally reprehensible when I lie. If I were to lie, I would do a terrible disservice to myself and others. People ask questions, seeking the truth. Who am I to deny them that truth-seeking experience? I think that when we, as a society or as individuals, are more honest with each other, we get to the root of the trouble.
